Had a great time cooking last night at the Downtown Women’s Center with some of our usual crew: Lisa Baertlein, Stacie Stukin, Sherri Nazarian,Monica Partridge, Steve DeBro, Ted Habte-Gabr, Carlos Sayán Wong, Steve Gregory and a special guest named Hope. If you’re here in Los Angeles, consider joining us next time. A couple of us shop for the food, then we all cook it in the Center’s gorgeous kitchen, and all chip in to pay (what we can) for the ingredients. All you need to know how to do… chop! And your reward is knowing that you feed 140 homeless or needy women for lunch the next day. A healthy meal at that. (Last night we made a beautiful beef and veggie casserole, minted carrots and zucchini, a gorgeous salad, and a special surprise of Apple Crisp (thanks to Stacie’s and Lisa’s vigilance in multiplying the recipe.)

Here’s a story on local public radio about the Center, which recently moved into this new location in a restored (abandoned) building on San Pedro Street:irtalk/2011/07/06/womens-center/
