“Christmas has become an engine of putting the economy in the black,” said one of the participants in this fascinating little video debate on the NY Times site about the Santa-fication of the holiday.
If you had any question whether the rest of the world looks at Christmas as a religious holiday, check out these photos I took last year in January outside the public library in downtown Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. Pictures by the kids of Santa. (Note that just like Buddha in Bhutan, Santa’s looking fit and trim, not all chubby.) The captions are along the lines of this: “I wish in Bhutan we had Santa so we could get gifts.”
Ho ho ho, everybody!
