I picked up a fascinating read at the new Junction bookstore on Wogzin Lam off the traffic circle in Thimphu (a lovely addition to the city, by the way. It’s the first of its kind there.)
The book is called A Story of a Taxi Driver and His Wives. It’s an oral history of this interesting extended family, by a writer named Tshering Yangden, and it looks at a man named Karma who has, over the years, taken four wives and fathered eleven children. Polygamy and polyandry are allowed in Bhutan; the most famous example of it is by the fourth King, who married four sisters.
Reading about this Karma in his own words, I have to say it’s not exactly clear the nature of his charms.
